In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
