The people of Israel observe second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative involved in the talks said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without concrete outcomes, amid conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Essential Matters in Talks
- A permanent truce
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Post-war management of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "No location appears as home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."
"After we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester one woman stated: "We must do any agreement necessary for the hostages to return. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Surveys now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Gaza Circumstances
At the location of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the evening falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Situation
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medical staff said.
