The Mayor-Elect confirms plans to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing my complete efforts on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, it will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.
Political Debate
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.
The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
