Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
