The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
