The Israeli Premier League derby featuring Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv was abandoned prior to commencement on the weekend, due to what authorities characterized as "civil unrest and serious disturbances".
"Dozens of smoke grenades and fireworks were set off," Israeli police stated on online platforms, emphasizing "this cannot be considered a football game, it constitutes unrest and significant aggression".
A dozen civilians and three police personnel were hurt, officials confirmed, while nine people were arrested and sixteen detained for questioning.
The clashes occur just a brief period after authorities in the United Kingdom stated that Maccabi Tel Aviv fans cannot be permitted to be present at the Europa League game at Aston Villa in Britain next month because of safety concerns.
One team criticised the match postponement, alleging law enforcement of "gearing up for a war, not a game", even during meetings in the build-up to the highly-anticipated match.
"The disturbing incidents around the arena and following the reckless and scandalous decision to cancel the match only show that the law enforcement has taken control of the game," the team stated officially.
The other team has remained silent, only acknowledging the game was called off.
The ruling by Birmingham's Safety Advisory Group to prohibit club followers from the Aston Villa match on the sixth of November has triggered broad condemnation.
The UK government has later announced it is working to overturn the prohibition and exploring what additional resources might be necessary to guarantee the match can be conducted securely.
Aston Villa informed their security personnel that they were not required to attend at the game, saying they acknowledged that some "might feel uneasy".
On earlier in the week, local authorities stated it endorsed the restriction and designated the match as "concerning" due to information and past events.
That encompassed "violent clashes and discrimination incidents" among the Dutch team and their supporters before a fixture in the Netherlands in November 2024, when over sixty individuals were taken into custody.
There have been rallies at multiple sporting events regarding the situation in Gaza, such as when Israel played Norway and the European team in latest qualification games.
