New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
