The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner Unilever blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he will personally create the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner

The recent development intensifies the continuing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

Both founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support

The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Management Changes plus Upcoming Intentions

Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by Unilever.

This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
