Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family go about their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
