A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the identical stature as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: happy, multicultural, and grounded in customs that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
